Even though it is almost September, yesterday was the Philadelphia Union’s first 2020 home game. Courtesy of Covid-19, the last home game was on October 20, 2019, a come from behind 4-3 victory over the New York Red Bulls in the 2019 playoffs. While the 3-point result was the same against the same team, yesterday’s game certainly had a different ambiance. Without the crowd, the sounds of the highway and field players were apparent. The game was announced just as it was before the pandemic, seemingly directed to the small but loyal Sons of Ben watching the game from just outside the stadium gates.
The lone score from Philadelphia’s Kacper Przybylko came in the 31st minute, off of a picture perfect cross from Ray Gaddis, also assisted by Andrew Wooten. Like some of Philadelphia’s recent games, there were fissures in its defense and missed chances on offense. It never quite felt like the game was securely in hand. Andre Blake continued with the stellar goalkeeping performance we have been seeing in the limited games this year.
By game’s end, the loyal Sons of Ben crowded the gate of Subaru Park for a glimpse of their Boys in Blue and to cheer on the victory.
