While the West Coast experienced record high temperatures, Subaru Park was temperate for the Philadelphia Union’s midweek home game against the Columbus Crew.
An early strike by Philadelphia’s Jamiro Monteiro at the 24th minute was all it took for the Union to gain three points and for Andre Blake to earn another clean sheet.
Philadelphia reverted to defensive mode in the second half to preserve the one-goal lead, as evinced by its mere 38% of possession.
For those who dislike VAR, it may well have preserved the victory for Philadelphia. Matt Real subbed in for Jack McGlynn at the 58th minute. A mere five minutes later, Real was shown red for a tackle that first struck the ball and then caused the Crew to tumble. After review, the card was changed from red to yellow.
