Columbus Crew 1-Houston Dynamo 0
It’s amazing what can happen in one year’s time. This time last season Gyasi Zardes was on the outs with the Los Angeles Galaxy, having another difficult season mired with injuries and playing with an inconsistent side. This season, despite playing with a club consumed with turmoil off of the pitch, he has found his form with the Columbus Crew. That was never more evident than Saturday night at MAPFRE Stadium where Zardes delivered the game-winner late to defeat the Houston Dynamo 1-0.
Zardes’ goal came in the first minute of injury time. The goal was his fourteenth of the season. Goalkeeper Zach Steffen made five stops en route to his eighth shutout of the season. With the win the Crew expanded on their hold for fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings (11-7-6, 39 points) nine points ahead of the Philadelphia Union (9-11-3, 30 points). Houston meanwhile have now lost four consecutive matches in league play and are currently sitting in tenth place in the Western Conference standings (7-10-6, 26 points).
