Paraguay players kneel as they are about to eliminate Brazil

Paraguay players realise they’ve just eliminated Brazil

Chile 5 v Bolivia  0 (Estadio Nacional, Santiago) Fri 19 June

A commanding and comfortable victory for the host nation in front of a capacity crowd in the National Stadium against Bolivia who would eventually finish runners-up in the group.

There were high hopes going into this tournament that Chile would continue and build up on their impressive performance at the World Cup a year ago in Brazil. With the additional bonus of home advantage, Chile have a realistic chance of winning their first ever Copa America.

Argentina 1 v Jamaica 0 (Estadio Sausalito, Vina del Mar) Sat 20 June

Argentina achieved the victory they were after but it was a far from convincing performance. Indeed in the 2nd half Jamaica caused a number of scares for last year’s world cup finalists. It was disappointing for Argentina given that they brought with them an impressive 15,000+ fans who had travelled across the border to this scenic coastal town. Messi and co. however will be eager to find the additional energy after another long hard season to step up a gear and go one better than reaching the World Cup Final last year and win some silverware. A rather bizarre end to the game saw one of the Jamaican players (Brown) take a selfie with Messi while they were shaking hands on the pitch at the end of the match!

Brazil 2 v Venezuela 1 (Estadio Moumental, Santiago) Sun 21 June

Brazil progressed into the quarter finals after a narrow victory over Venezuela and will face Paraguay in their quarter final on Saturday in Concepcion.

Chile 1 v Uruguay 0 (Estadio Nacional, Santiago) Wed 24 June

Chile fought out a well-deserved victory against 9-man Uruguay scoring their winning goal with 10 minutes left to play. The match was stopped for some time in the last few minutes as Uruguay players, substitutes and club officials argued with one of the assistant referees. The defending champions crashed out as Chile marched on to the semi finals to play Peru.

Argentina v Columbia (Estadio Sausalito, Vina del Mar) Fri 26 June

Argentina won a dramatic penalty shoot-out against Columbia to progress to the semi-final of the Copa. Columbia missed 3 penalties in a row but Argentina squandered the first 2 chances before Carlos Tevez finally took the 3rd opportunity to seal the victory.

It was tough luck for David Ospina, the Columbian goal-keeper, who was man of the match after pulling off some incredible saves during the game to keep the scoresheet blank.

Brazil v Paraguay (Estadio Municipal, Concepcion) Sat 27 June

Brazil lost again at the quarter final stage to Paraguay, having met the same fate 4 years ago at the Copa America in Argentina.

The match finished 1-1 after a 2nd-half equaliser from Paraguay who went onto win the penalty shoot-out 5-4.
