One streak ends, but two other streaks endure.
The LA Galaxy saw its four-match winning streak end on Sunday night. That however was not enough to dampen its spirits, and it certainly wasn’t for a lack of trying. The Galaxy had their chances at Avaya Stadium on Sunday night, but when all was said and done, the Galaxy saw its undefeated and points streak preserved following the scoreless draw against its archrival San Jose Earthquakes.
“I think the game was very tight,” Galaxy Head Coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto said. “None of us took advantage during the game. We fought; we ran, I think during the game we could have had the ball and managed the ball better, try to find the option to score and play, that is the point. We fight, we run and sometimes you have to do that but today we needed to play a little more.”
The Galaxy’s best chance of the match came in the 42nd minute, as they had the ball well inside Earthquakes territory, they worked the ball around outside the penalty area and Efrain Alvarez let loose a left-footed shot from about 25 yards out that took a bounce, forced Keeper Daniel Vega to dive to his right, but Vega got a huge assist from the framework, as the shot hit off the near post and harmlessly back into play. The Galaxy’s other best scoring opportunity came in the 75th minute, as Alvarez sent a corner kick low into the penalty area, Jonathan Dos Santos flicked a ball into the six-yard box and Sebastian Lletget headed a ball towards goal, but Vega made the save.
The Quakes did have some chances themselves to grab a goal. Their first chance was actually the first real chance in the match for either side, which came in the 34th minute, as Marcos Lopez faked Julian Araujo, dribbled into the penalty area, played a cross for Shea Salinas, Lletget cut off the cross, but the ball went to Jackson Yueill, who took a quick touch before firing a shot inside the 18-yard box that was parried over the endline by Keeper David Bingham.
‘When you go on the road and you can get a shutout, you give yourself a chance to get at least a point,” Bingham said. “If we put up a shutout, you kind of expect us to get three points, but off night for the offense, but that’s OK as we held it down from the back tonight. There’s been many times where the offense has picked us up. On to the next one next weekend.”
The Galaxy welcomed back Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez back onto the gameday roster. Chicharito had not played since the Galaxy’s first game of the MLS is Back Tournament due to a calf injury suffered during training during the tournament. However, Chichatiro was part of the Galaxy’s 18-man roster on Sunday night and replaced Ethan Zubak in the 57th minute.
“Chicharito didn’t have big options because the team didn’t give him the possibility to score, But I think it’s good to have him on the 18 man roster,” Schelotto said. “He will get better and better every game and I hope to have the best version of him very soon.”
The Galaxy hopes the best version of Chicharito comes in its next match, which will be home on Saturday night against the Colorado Rapids.
