CHICAGO, IL—Chicago Fire FC have built up a roster in a short amount of time and have acquired their third Desginated Player on Monday with the signing of midfielder Gaston Gimenez of Argentina’s Velez Sarsfield. Gimenez, 28, is under contract with the Fire through 2021 with a club option for 2022. He will join the club pending receipt of his ITC and P-1 Visa.

Gimenez has played his entire career in Argentina starting in 2011-12 at Argentine second division side Club Almirante Brown and then with Atletico Tucuman before joining Superliga side Godoy Cruz in 2015. There, he made 68 appearances over three seasons including seven in the Copa Libertadores in 2017.

He would then have a brief spell at Estudiantes de La Plata before joining Velez Sarsfield in 2018. Gimenez has one cap for Argentina which was earned in 2018.

“We are thrilled to acquire a player with the quality of Gastón Giménez,” said Chicago Fire FC Head Coach Raphael Wicky. “Gastón has a great left foot and is very gifted in the technical and physical aspects of the game. In addition, his humility and desire to always give his best for the team will fit in very well with the culture that we are establishing here at the Fire. I am looking forward to welcoming him to Chicago and having him be a leader on our team.”
