It’s not often we quote George Orwell on Prost Amerika which is probably a bad thing. It’s even less often we misquote him, which is probably a slightly better thing.
But sometimes you just cannot avoid a headline that gives itself as a gift. Similarly, when Paul Mariner left New England Revs to become coach at Plymouth Argyle, (nickname the Pilgrims); we felt it would be dishonourable not to use the headline “Mariner sets sail from New England to become Pilgrim”.
Eddie Johnson put two past Chivas USA Dan Kennedy in a game that took place during the heat of an election season. Can you really not use “Johnson defeats Kennedy”? Well, confirmed Democrat Joe Roth liked it. Portland release iconic goalkeeper Troy Perkins? The “Fall of Troy” writes itself.
Sunday’s historic Cascasdia Derby in Portland will be remembered for many things, though probably not this article’s headline, in the Rose City and doubtless forgotten for just as many in the Emerald City.
Accentuating the southern positive, four different Portland Timbers players each scored in the 4-2 win; Vytas Andriuskevicius (16′), Fanendo Adi (21′), Lucas Melano (29′) and Steven Taylor (44′).

As is traditional each goalscorer receives a slice of Oregonian wood from mascot Timber Joey after the match. You might think that this would be rare but an examination of recent history finds that Portland have fielded four different scorers SIX times in the last three years.
1. Portland Timbers 4 : 2 Vancouver Whitecaps<
It last happened as recently as May when four completely different individuals all scored in May’s 4-2 victory over Vancouver; Diego Valeri, Jack McInerney, Dairon Asprilla and Darlington Nagbe.
2. LA Galaxy 2 : 5 Portland Timbers
Although Portland netted four or more three times in 2015, only three players netted in any of the home games, although Adi, Diego Chara, Nagbe and Maximilano Urruti all scored in the 5-2 win at Los Angeles.

3. Portland Timbers 6 : 0 Alpha United
FIVE different players actually scored when the Timbers beat Alpha United 6-0 in the CCL in September 2014; Jack Jewsbury, Gaston Fernandez, two from Norberto Paparatto, Michael Nanchoff and Adi again.
4. Alpha United 1 : 4 Portland Timbers
In the away leg, there were again four different scorers; Steve Zakuani, Urruti, Adi and Alvas Powell.
5. Chivas USA 0 : 5 Portland Timbers
2013 was not a blank year either. Wallace, Ryan Johnson and Will Johnson added goals to a Valeri brace in the 0-5 rout of a fastly dilapidating Chivas USA.
6. Portland Timbers 4 : 0 Toronto FC
A month earlier, Kalif Alhassan, Rodney Wallace, Will Johnson and Valeri each scored in a September home win over Toronto.

So yes, every picture including Diego Diaz’s photo above tells a story, but it’s not always as unique a story as you might think.
