After playing two games on the road, the Houston Dynamo lost at home against their in-state rival Austin FC. The late goal by Emiliano Rigoni gave three important points for ‘Los Verdes’, who went home seating at the 8th place on the Western Conference.

The match was a fight from the starting whistle. Both teams knew winning this new derby will help not only add three more points, but boost their confidence for the second quart of the season.

Both teams created chances to score, but the home side was closer to score the opener. Houston controlled the possession of the ball and with that the tempo of the match. Even though they were superior throughout the match, that was not showing on the scoreboard. Austin took advantage of the offensive mindset that Houston had and at the 86th minute Rigoni found a long pass and control the ball just inside the big box to beat goalkeeper Steve Clark for the final 1-0.

Houston’s last match took place in Minnesota where they got a great victory over the home team, 2-1. However, they have been inconsistent throughout the season. Part of this is because they are missing a few players. By missing players such as Eric Sviatchenko and Franco Escobar has created a negative impactfor the Orange, who keeps suffering in defense. Also, the offense has not been working as well as last season since Corey Biard left the team in the winter.

The good news for the Dynamo was the returned of Hector Herrera. He saw his first minutes of the season and even though the team did not get the result they wanted, having its biggest leader and captain back will boost a Houston squad that needs to find the consistency they showed last season.

Now Houston needs to refocus because they have another derby ahead as they will be visiting Frisco, Texas to played against FC Dallas on April 27. This match is very important for both teams. Dynamo wants to get the win to remain at the top spots on the standings, whereas Dallas wants to start getting points to avoid being in the last place of the conference.

On the other side, Austin FC will host the conference’s first place LA Galaxy in the State capital, with the mission to keep winning to points to gain position on the Western Conference standings.
