JAMAICA – Almost effortlessly, Mexico defeated Cuba in the opening match of the CONCACAF U-20 Championships. The 9-1 scoreline sums up the game, where El Tri dominated and did as they pleased throughout the match.
The Mexicans are looking to win this tournament for a third consecutive time and are off to a good start with a confidence boosting win. Two goals each from Alejandro Diaz, Guillermo Martinez, Hirving Lozano, and Jose Ramirez, as well as a single goal from Luis Marquez led the ‘Tricolor’ to victory over the Caribbean side. Cuba had momentarily drawn level 1-1 with an Eddy Saname goal.
Things got started off quickly with Alejandro Diaz opening the score in the first play of the game. One minute later Cuba had equalized through Saname. Still only six minutes into the match the third goal was scored as Martinez re-gave Mexico the lead.
The goal fest continued as Diaz found his brace and Lozano went on to score a brace of his own on top of his three assists in the first half. Ramirez scored the last one before the halftime break to send the match into halftime with a 6-1 scoreline.
The second half started in similar fashion with Mexico scoring in the opening minute through Ramirez once again. Martinez added his name to the brace list through a penalty kick and Luis Marquez closed out the scoring for Mexico.
El Tri will now go up against Canada on Monday January 12th in the same stadium. The match is scheduled for 3:00pm EST / 12:00pm PST.
