DC United Ties Colorado 0-0, A tale of Two Halves

Soccer is a simple game with more complex rhythms than one might assume.  As the night played out, the tide shifted, goals seemed imminent, yet no one scored.  Both sides varied their attacks but met the same fate with last minute blocks and one great penalty kick save.  Let’s look at how it developed.

United gained the initiative early with the up tempo play that Coach Wayne Rooney has preached.  Players off the ball made incisive runs and were often rewarded but the string of passes too often ended one short of a goal.  Colorado kept its restraint line near midfield, hoping to work quick counters.

By the 28th minute, DC had settled into attacking mostly down the left side with Martin Rodriguez and Andy Najar creating dangerous situations.  As the game progressed the attack became more deliberate and spread across the field.  By the 40th minute Colorado dictated a slower pace as they controlled slightly more of the possession at half time.

Then the game changed.  Both sides went with similar styles of control first and quick action when opportunities seemed available.  Play was even with DC slightly ahead in possession.  Both threatened and both held firm on defense.

For United’s part, the continuing rotation of players into the squad seems to slow the familiarity necessary for rapid play.  The latest addition, Christian Benteke played his first home game as a full game to Rooney’s delight.  Late in the game he demonstrated that he is physically up to speed as he was seen helping the defense.  The only signs of rust were his slightly too high header midway through the second half and his firm penalty shot which was repelled by Colorado’s William Yarbrough.

He won most of the challenges as his teammates sent mostly high balls to him which he often passed with insight.  His play will continue to elevate DC’s effectiveness.  He is positive about the prospect of continuing team development, “I think I’ve been training now for not more than a month.  I still have to get to know them and they have to get to know me.”

Regarding the game itself he averred that, “The way that we played, I think it was positive.”  He continued in the same vein, “I think we have a great squad with good players – – – now it’s about playing together and knowing each other.”

On the injury front, Rodriguez was injured in the 77th minute and appeared mobile but limping in the locker room.  Taxi Fountas remains sidelined with a head issue.  While his replacement, Miguel Berry performed well, Taxi’s return to play with Benteke along with the growing familiarity among the players should provide more goals to help DC United to finish the season strongly.

Their next test will be at Rio Tinto Stadium against Real Salt Lake this Saturday at 9:30 EDT.
