Dallas win 6-5 on penalties

FC Dallas scraped through to the last 16 of the US Open Cup after a nailbiting penalty shoot out over Oklahoma Energy. Colin Bonner scored the vital 1th take of the shoot out to push Dallas ahead after Cyprian Hedrick had shot his over the bar.

Dallas had been seconds from winning in normal time but Michael Thomas pulled level in the closing stages. Jordan Rideout had given Energy the lead but two strikes from Carlos Lizarazo put Dallas in the driving seat before the late drama.

Max Urruti had the first chance of the match in 11 minutes following a supply from Agustin Jara but Oklahoma goalkeeper CJ Cochran safely gathered.

Shortly after, Mauro Diaz fired an even easier chance over as it seemed that the Energy might be overrun. As they had in the previous round at Rayo, the Energy struggled to obtain serious possession in the opening stages.

However, it was the visitors who took the lead against the run of play when Rideout reacted first after the ball bounced off Daniel Gonzalez as Dallas defender Aaron Guillen tackled him to put Energy into the lead. Juan Esteban Ortiz was booked in 34th but there was better news for Dallas four minutes later.

In the 38th minute, Dallas notched a deserved equaliser when Carlos Lizarazo netted his first from a wide angle, with Coy Craft being credited with the assist.

Rideout could have added a second for Oklahoma shortly after but headed a Kyle Hyland cross over as the first half seemed to be coming to a close. That proved costly as Lizarazo added a second for the hosts before the interval with a similar turn and shot.

Dallas began the second half as they began the first, in a dominating,  possession rich mode. Max Urruti was heavily involved looking a constant threat. Rideout chipped over after Jose Cuevas set him up at the other end.

Oklahoma defender Michael Harris had to be very sharp as the 1, in a Dallas 2 0n 1 situation but he was able to keep Dallas’ lead to one.

Dallas keeper Jesse Gonzalez made a big save in the 88th minute to deny OKC an equaliser but that just prevented what was to come, With the match about to enter stoppage time, Michael Harris got on the end of a Cuevas corner for the leveler, which sent the game into extra time.

In stoppage time, Dallas forced a series of corners but the first half was far from one sided. It ended with no further goals but a yellow card for Energy’s Harris for an elbow on Zach Loyd. Loyd didn’t return after four minutes of the second half of ET, leaving Dallas to face the last 11 minutes with ten men, having used all their substitutes.

They survived and the match went to penalties.

Konig, Cuevas, Thomas scored for Oklahoma, while Lizarazo, Acosta, and  Diaz netted for Dallas. However Jesse Gonzalez saved Oklahoma’s 4th spot kick from Wojcik and Dallas had the advantage.

Then CJ Cochran came up big to deny Matt Hedges, and leave the shoot out at 3-3. Peter Toth and Coady Andrews for Oklahoma and Harris and Ortiz for Dallas all netted to bring it to 5-5.

Hedrick skied his and Bonner scored to give Dallas the path to the next round, 6-5 on penalties.
