D.C. United news and notes: Explosions! Suspensions! Exclamation Points!

Why is it that 1-0 losses always seem to hurt the worst. Perhaps it is the proximity to victory, that had one not made one bad mistake that the match could have been salvaged. Or perhaps it is because of how crippling it can be to a team’s confidence.

Whatever the reason it is, losing 1-0 is never fun and as D.C. United found out last week against Toronto F.C. it can completely snuff out any confidence a team has during a home stand. An early Sebastian Giovinco strike coupled with a handful of mental errors pushed United back down the Eastern Conference standings (1-3-3, 6 points).

All hope is not lost in the nation’s capital as D.C. still has many matches ahead of them in their 2016 campaign. But with the club struggling at home one has to wonder if at the end of the season if they do not see this string of poor performances as a lost opportunity. Another chance awaits D.C. to find their form on Saturday as they host the New England Revolution: (5:30 pm EST NewsChannel 8).

Olsen suspended for Revolution rematch.

Earlier in the week Major League Soccer announced that Ben Olsen would be suspended for United’s upcoming match against the New England Revolution. United assistant Chad Ashton will take his place as interim head coach for the match.

Now what was Olsen suspended for? For entering the field of play to retrieve an extra ball. No, this is not a joke.

On a week where referees could not tell the difference between Michael Parkhurst and Tyson Wahl this suspension seems a bit odd. While it is certainly following the letter of the law perhaps this is a bit strict?

Olsen, of course, was none too enthused about the suspension. In a text to Washington Post’s Steve Goff Olsen said, “It is absurd that I have to watch this match from the stands.”

There is going to be a demolition!

No RFK Stadium is not finally going the way of the dinosaurs. On Monday April 25 the club and D.C. mayor Muriel Bowser will be hosting a demolition event near the new stadium site in the Buzzards Point neighborhood. The event will begin at 11 am at Second and S Street SW.

While this is not the end of RFK Stadium or the breaking of ground on D.C.’s new stadium this is a major step in the stadium process.

Now here is the real question: Will the team be giving out ceremonial D.C. United hard hats?

Another piece of interesting news on the stadium: as of right now the club is tentatively calling the stadium “D.C. United Stadium.” While simplicity is nice yours truly is still hoping for The Ben’s Chili Bowl.
