The CONCACAF Olympic Qualifiers will start in Guadalajara, Mexico on March 18th when 8 teams will compete for the two spots at the Tokyo Olympic Games this coming summer.
This tournament was planned to take place on March of 2020, but due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the Olympic Games were rescheduled for this year’s summer. Therefore, this tournament got rescheduled to a year after.
The eight teams competing for two places at the games were divided in two groups. Group A fixtures host nation and favorite to win the tournament, Mexico; USA, Costa Rica, and the Dominic Republic are the other three teams in this group. Group B has Honduras, Canada, El Salvador, and Haiti. They will play each other in their respective groups and the top two squads will qualify to the Semifinals. The winners of the semis will qualify to the Tokyo Games.
The two teams that represented CONCACAF in the last Olympics were Mexico and Honduras. The only team from the area that has won the GOLD medal is Mexico. They got the gold medal after beating Brazil at Wembley Stadium on the 2012 London Olympic Games.
As said before, for this CONCACAF tournament one of the favorite team to make it to Tokyo is Mexico. The other team is the USA. The Americans did not qualify to the past Olympics and they are coming to this tournament with a good and experience Under-23 squad that want to make the United States relevant again at one of the biggest world football stages.
Honduras, Canada, and Costa Rica are also teams that will always be competitive and can challenge ‘El Tri’ and ‘Team USA’.
