Toronto FC 2- Tigres 1
Liga MX-MLS matches over the years have been so predictable that they almost follow a script. Tell us if this sounds familiar: Top sides from both continents meet. Liga MX side takes early advantage on the road. MLS side is unable to equalize and thus finds themselves down in the series going to Mexico. Rinse, lather, repeat.
But a funny thing happened on the way to Tigres’ victory party at BMO Field on Wednesday night: Toronto FC did come back. Thanks to two second half goals The Reds erased a one goal deficit to earn the 2-1 win in the first of their two legged CONCACAF Champions League series against the Mexican giants.
After a tense first-half which saw both sides nearly find the back of the net, Tigres took the advantage thanks to an Eduardo Vargas goal in the 56th minute. But Toronto would respond with Jozy Altidore netting the equalizer just eight minutes later. Things would get a bit chippy from both sides with the heavily partisan Toronto crowd wanting the match-winner. They would not be disappointed as Jonathon Osorio would supply it to them with his goal in the 89th minute.
The series will resume next Tuesday (10pm EST, Univision Deportes, GO90) with Toronto traveling to Estadio Universitario to take on U.A.N.L. You can check out Luis Martinez’s recap of the match here.
