SANDY, UT—The Chicago Red Stars spoiled the party for 19,203 at Rio Tinto Stadium as they went away 1-0 winners over the Utah Royals who were playing in their inaugural home match.
The goal came in the 27th minute as an attempted clearance by the Royals went to the feet of Danielle Colaprico who shot one off the volley and into the upper 90 past Abby Smith.
The closest Utah got to an equalizer was in the 56th minute as Diana Matheson sent a thru-ball to Gunnhildur Yrsa Jonsdottir, but was snuffed out by Alyssa Naeher who came off her line to meet the shot.
Amy Rodriguez came on as a sub for the Royals in the 77th minute after nearly a full year off. She would get one chance in the 88th minute, but well wide and Naeher would come off her line to deny her a second opportunity a minute later.
The Red Stars (1-1-1) return home on Wednesday to host the Houston Dash at 6:30pm CT. Utah (0-1-2) goes to North Carolina on Saturday at 3:30pm ET on Lifetime.
