Chicago Fire II 2-0 Forward Madison FC

BRIDGEVIEW, IL—In cold and wet conditions at SeatGeek Stadium, Chicago Fire II put their name in the hat for the third round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup with a 2-0 win over Forward Madison FC on USL League One.

CF2 got on the board first after Omari Glasgow’s cross was dropped by keeper Miguel Sanchez and David Poreba would pounce on the loose ball to put the hosts ahead. The Flamingos of Forward Madison would have their chances to get back into the match, but none of the ten shots on the evening would be on target.

CF2 were in fact, closer to the target with their shots with one hitting the crossbar in the 25th minute through Harold Osorio. Jason Shookalook was looking to add to CF2’s lead later in the match and missed a couple of chances to connect on crosses in front of ogal. However, it would be third time lucky for Shookalook as he got past Sanchez far post after collecting a long ball from Lamonth Rochester for his first professional goal.

“Yeah, I mean, first of all, the goal is super special,” said Shookalook. “I’ve been really close the past couple of weeks, but finally, you know it just went my way tonight. I thought after missing two diving headers that it wasn’t going to happen. But you know, it was great. It was a great first goal. I’m so grateful just to have the opportunity. My teammates set me up well and everything and I mean, maybe Ludo’s right. I told him to keep doing the same thing. It’s worked out well.”

The draw for the third round of the US Open Cup will take place on Thursday at noon with USL Championship sides entering the tournament. That is something that captain David Poreba is excited for.

“It’s an incredible opportunity for all of us to compare to the level of the USL Championship,” said Poreba. “But I feel like we’re going to go into, whoever we play, we’re going to go into that game with a lot of confidence that we’re going to win and move on. Doesn’t matter who it is.”

Chicago Fire II’s next match is Sunday in MLS NEXT Pro against Crown Legacy FC (Charlotte FC’s MLS NEXT Pro squad) on Sunday at SeatGeek Stadium. Kickoff is at 6pm.

Forward Madison return to USL League One play and their league home opener against Richmond Kickers on Satruday, April 13th at Breese-Stevens Field.
