It was an emotional afternoon at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea remembered their inspirational captain Ray Wilkins.
Wilkins (1956-2018) died last week and although he also donned the shirt of Manchester United, Milan, QPR, Paris SG, and England, he will be remembered as Mr Chelsea.
He captained the club at 18 not leaving when the club was relegated in 1975 and in dire financial straits. Taking over from John Hollins, he immediately became the face of the club. The £825,000 the Blues received in 1979 when he left for Old Trafford was a serious financial input into their coffers.
He played 84 times for England and had spells in Scotland too.
Despite his young success, Wilkins never suffered from the ego issues of many talented players of his era and remained one of the kind, approachable and humble stars of the football world.
Today, he was well remembered at Stamford Bridge before their game with West Ham, and it seemed at times the minute’s silence would not end.
Chelsea drew the game with West Ham 1-1 after Chicharito Hernandez came off the bench to equalise for the Hammers.
