In front of a sellout crowd of 64,101, fans U.S. Bank Stadium was christened as AC Milan took on Chelsea in an International Champions Cup match. Both sides had chips on their shoulders following losses in previous matches. And it didn’t take long for the squads to settle into the Minnesota Vikings new home.
AC Milan came out of the gate firing. Niang Mbaye created a few opportunities for the side early, but Chelsea ended up on the board first. Bertrand Traore gave the Blues an early 1-0 lead following a goal off the rebound.
While Milan controlled the ball most of the half, Chelsea was able to generate chances on the counter attack. The Blues swarming defense help aid in the effort. Ultimately Forward Diego Costa remained quiet for most of his time in the game, but Oscar helped carry the side and solidified a roster spot heading into next season.
Giacomo Bonaventura put Milan on the board right before halftime after slicing home a penalty kick. AC looked as though they had a chance to get back into the game.
Chelsea however pulled away down the stretch following two second half goals from Oscar. The first coming from a penalty kick after Milan defender Andrea Poli was flagged for a hand ball in the 70th minute. The second goal come off an assist from Juan Cuadrado in the 87th minute to seal the match.
The Blues have a little bit of clarity now heading into their last preseason match Sunday before their Premier League debut against London rivals West Ham United. AC Milan will have a little time off before their season opening Serie A match against Torino.
