For the first time in the club’s history, Charlotte FC lost to New York City FC.

With the loss, Charlotte remains winless on the road this season, with four losses and one draw.

Nathan Byrne and Adilson Malanda returned to the starting XI for Charlotte, along with Nikola Petković and Junior Urso starting with Ashley Westwood in the midfield.

Charlotte started off the game on a good note, scoring the first goal of the match in the third minute off the foot of Kerwin Vargas. Charlotte kept the pressure on NYCFC with another chance in the eighth minute that resulted in a point blank save on a shot from Liel Abada.

NYCFC had several chances in the first half that they were not able to put away, the closest coming in the 32nd minute on a Santiago Rodríguez free kick that forced Kristijan Kahlina to make an acrobatic save at the crossbar.

NYCFC broke through with a goal scored by Keaton Parks with a header from a free kick in the 41st minute.

Both teams had a goal disallowed due to an offside call early in the second half. After several chances from NYCFC, they scored the winner in added time.

The match was reminiscent of last season, giving up a late goal to lose. Charlotte only registered eight shots with four being on goal while allowing 18 shots for NYCFC, seven of which were on target. Charlotte was also called offside six times.

Charlotte’s next match is back at home against the Portland Timbers on Saturday, May 4 at 7:30 p.m. EST. The match is available to watch on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
