Whitecaps - TFC-9727Toronto FC are currently fourth in the MLS’ Eastern Conference and are well set for a playoff spot at the end of the season. Greg Vanney’s side have improved significantly since the last campaign and, with Jozy Altidore, Sebastian Giovinco and Michael Bradley as their Designated Players, they have talent and experience in abundance. We take a look at Toronto’s hopes and expectations for the remainder of the season and consider their chances of winning the MLS Cup at the end of the campaign.

Vanney’s men have struggled in recent months, winning just two of their last eight MLS matches. Despite this, Toronto remain in contention for a playoff spot and could finish as high as second in the Eastern Conference. In theory, they could even climb above DC United and take the top spot but that would require the Canadian side to win all three of their games in-hand before going on a sensational run at the end of the campaign. While they are more than capable of stringing a set of winning performances together, it is difficult to see the Washington based side squandering their advantage at the top of the division.

Defensively, they are incredibly unstable and their discipline is often questionable. At times, Toronto’s attacking style can backfire and leave them open to the counter-attack – something that has continued to hurt them throughout the duration of the campaign. Toronto have already conceded 38 goals in 22 matches, which is the worst ratio in the entire Eastern Conference.

Opposing sides will continue to exploit the gaping holes in Toronto’s defense unless they learn to tighten up at the back and this will be a problem if the Canadian side want to reach the latter stages of the playoffs. The likes of Ashtone Morgan – who has both Premier League and international experience – must step up and be counted for if Toronto are to stand a chance of success.

In attack, they boast some of the league’s best players. Sebastian Giovinco’s form this season has earned him rave reviews during recent live football commentary from both pundits and experts, while Jozy Altidore’s contributions have also not gone unnoticed at BMO Field. The Italian has netted a phenomenal 16 goals in 22 appearances this season and is well on the way to becoming Toronto’s all-time leading scorer in the MLS. Giovinco is at the heart of everything Toronto do and will be crucial to their aspirations for the remainder of the campaign.

The Canadian side are hard-working and there is an excellent team spirit throughout the group. While they may not possess the same levels of talent as others, Toronto FC are passionate and are confident in their own ability – a vital trait to succeed in the sport. Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco will continue to score goals throughout the regular season but could come unstuck against the league’s best defenses. Toronto must tighten up their defensive line if they are to compete for the title. Attacking and goals may win you matches, but defense will always win you championships.
