Bundesliga Matchday 27 Review

With an International break upcoming all Bundesliga clubs looked to end on a high, but not all reached that pinnacle.

RB Leipzig found out prior to their match that they would face Olympique Marseille in the Europa League next round then they took on league leaders Bayern and at home defeated Munich 2-1. Victory keeps Leipzig in the pack of teams chasing the Champions League while others chase the Europa League.

For Leipzig it was the comeback. Sandro Wagner lead the line in place of Robert Lewandowski and heading home an early first half goal looked like Bayern was in typical control. Thing was it was a late first half goals that showed Bayern was in cruse control when Naby Keita scored for Leipzig. A second half goal from Timo Werner put the pressure back on Bayern and the reigning champions was unable to come back and get a share of the points.

FC Koln has been through the mill this campaign so a 2-0 win over local rivals Bayer Leverkusen gives hope to life after this season. For Bayer Leverkusen this defeat means that they stay in the first Europa League place and not in the coveted fourth Champions League place. For the Billy Goats this victory moves them to 17th place, the first time off the bottom since matchday two and now are five points away from Wolfsburg and Mainz in 15th and 16th respectively.

A late Matthias Ginter goal meant Borussia Monchengladbach held share of the spoils with resurgent Hoffenheim in a 3-3 goal thriller. For the Foals manager Dieter Hecking this match has saved himself from the chopping block as the fans have now turned on their beleaguered manager.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga

In the Rhine Main derby Eintracht Frankfurt put three past relegation threatened Mainz 05. Frankfurt also benefited from Leverkusen dropping the full points and the eagles find themselves in the Champions League places.

Resurrection of Stuttgart under Tayfun Korkut continues as VfB Stuttgart defeated SC Freiburg 2-1 on the weekend opener on Friday. That makes 17 points earned from a possible 21 since his appointment.

Hertha Berlin piled on the misery on HSV in their 2-1 victory in Hamburg. The Dinosaurs took the lead but their inability to get even a point means that they now go to bottom of the table.

Wolfsburg was punished very late by an own goal to lose to Schalke 1-0. This coupled with other results leaves a five point gap between them and Koln in 17 and five points between them and the next team Freiburg.

A 3-1 away victory for Werder Bremen sees the northern giant move to 12 in the table. Once a relegation candidate since their 4-2 loss to Bayern they have earned a substantial 16 points out of their last seven matches.

Borussia Dortmund, fresh off their disappointment in the Europa League rebounded with a 1-0 victory over Hannover 96. This win sees a three point gap between themselves in third place and Frankfurt in fourth.

Prost Amerika Player of the Week

Kevin-Prince Boateng has been a revolation at Eintracht Frankfurt this season. Since his free transfer to the club in the summer he has shed the former dressing room distraction persona for one of a leader. His role has been key in Frankfurt’s rise during this campaign and looked stellar, including a goal, in the 3-0 win over Mainz.
