More coaching changes and derby winners. This and more in the Bundesliga review.
Werder Bremen made relegation a less of a worry for them and more for HSV in the 1-0 victory. Aron Johannsson played the vital ball as Van Drongelen was at fault for the own goal and the difference in the final Nordderby of the season. Bremen finds themselves two points and two places from the relegation playoff while losers HSV are now seven points off of that position. One thing is for sure this derby looks to go dormant for next season.
Bayern Munich has been one who has not bothered with the title race but slipped up at home to Hertha Berlin was a quite surprise in their 0-0 draw in Munich. Hertha has had a knack of being able to take points off reigning champions Bayern for some time. The last two matches in Berlin have played out to draws with last seasons being a last minute draw for the former champions.
FC Koln was one who benefited from HSV losing, but their own efforts in their 2-1 victory saw them draw level on points and see the light of relegation survival after their visit to Leipzig. The Billy Goats conceded in the first half but their resilience and pair of goals in the second half shows that they have more than a fighting chance.
Elsewhere in the Bundesliga
Stuttgart earned themselves a third victory in four under new manager Tayfun Korkut. Defeating Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 at home looks to have secured themselves enough of a cushion to fend off the challenges of a relegation battle.
Borussia Dortmund’s fans showed their displeasure in the new Monday fixture as nearly 1/3 of the stadium was empty for their 1-1 draw with Augsburg. They might be still in Europe and second place in the table but nothing is for certain at BVB with a caretaker still in place.
Relagation six pointer ended in a worthless 1-1 draw between Mainz and Wolfsburg. Each team is facing a precipitous spot at they currently sit in 16th and 15th. Each is set to lose much if results do not improve.
Schalke came away big winners in their 2-0 win over Leverkusen. Each is pushing for a top four finish but as of now it would seem the Royal Blues are looking for a return to the big European stage while Bayer to return to the lesser European competition.
Borussia Monchengladbach earned a 1-0 win over Hannover 96. Questions still swirl around if manager Dieter Hecking is the right person to take the club forward.
Hoffenheim played SC Freiburg to a 1-1 draw. Julian Naglesmann has not gotten his squad back into their normal rhythem but then again credit to Freiburg who were everyone’s favorite for relegation as they move to 29 points.
Prost Amerika’s Bundesliga Player of the Week
Leonardo Bittencourt had been out for the last three months as FC Koln struggled in one of the worst starts to a Bundesliga season. His match winner moves the Billy Goats to be tied on points with 17th HSV and only seven points from the relegation playoff and eight from total safety.
