On a wet Pacific Northwest afternoon, the DC United Boys came to Providence Park and got a valuable win over the Portland Timbers after an own goal play by its center back Bill Tuiloma.
On a play in the 25’ minute, with DCU on the attack, Ulises Segura sent a cross inside the area, for a play probably could been stopped with no problem by Timbers goalkeeper Steve Clark.
Maybe, a lack of communication between Bill Tuiloma and Steve Clark, after his intentions to intercept that ball sent by Segura, but he instead sent the ball inside his own goal.
In the end, this became the game only score.
However, this match had all the elements of a win for the Rose City squad and unfairly seen as these endured all game long, in the end it considered as a hard loss in these final stages of league play.
As the Portland Timbers therefore dominating the match, especially in its second half, these had a couple of shoots hitting the woodwork one by Diego Valeri and another by Jorge Moriera.
Consequently, with the Rose City side outshooting DC United 23-7 and having a possession of 67.3%.
Once again for manager Giovanni Savarese seeing his side depleted with injuries and absences with just sixteen players in its roster, as his side deliver another wondrous game but falling short.
This time the local side was still missing in the likes of Larry’s Mabiala, Zarek Valentin, Sebastian Blanco and Brian Fernandez and in these stages of the competition this is somehow a burden.
Still this squad came up big with some notable plays, a couple of defensively one by Eryk Williamson on a shoot that DCU disputed as a goal on the 36’ minute and later Steve Clark denying Paul Arriola in the 82’ in what could be the go-ahead goal.
Despite several absences in the Timbers starting eleven, still these manage to put a good number of shoots and creating opportunities alongside its defensive game being very vocal and opportune.
Now the Portland Timbers are to get ready for their midweek game on September 18 against a tough and hardened New York Red Bulls side.
