The Portland Thorns announced yesterday they have acquired defender Becky Sauerbrunn from Utah Royals FC in exchange for Elizabeth Ball and $100,000 in allocation money.
Sauerbrunn, 34, joins the Thorns with an impressive list of accolades, including four-time NWSL Defender of the Year, seven-time NWSL Best XI Selection, and two-time NWSL champion. Becky is also a longtime USWNT call-up with 174 caps.
The acquisition of Sauerbrunn is the latest roster overhaul move in an offseason which has already seen the departures of Midge Purce, Hayley Raso, Emily Sonnett, Caitlin Foord, and Andressinha. New arrivals include 2020 NWSL Draft #1 overall pick Sophia Smith, Rocky Rodriguez (acquired from Sky Blue FC in exchange for Purce), and #2 overall pick Morgan Weaver.
