It was bound to happen sooner or later. Bayern lost for the first time under Carlo Ancelotti, 1-0, to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League. Bayern are second in Group D after PSV Enidhoven and FC Rostov drew, 2-2, on Wednesday. Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco scored the only goal on 35 minutes after a feed from Antoine Griezmann.
Atletico could’ve doubled their advantage five minutes from time after Arturo Vidal felled Filipe Luis in the box, but Griezmann struck the spot kick off the crossbar. Bayern had plenty of chances to get a result from this match, but the accuracy of the shots was lacking.
Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer suggested that his team lacked a killer instinct on this night.
“We knew it wouldn’t be easy,” said Neuer. “It was difficult to score. Atlético have the killer instinct, they make a lot out of few chances. We lacked this killer touch today.”
“We controlled the game, but taken altogether we lacked aggression and determination in one-on-ones,” said Ancelotti. “We lost possession too often and were too slow. You have to be quicker and make use of your chances against Atlético. It wasn’t a good display. However, it was only one game. It’s going to be better next time.”
Next time is Saturday at home to FC Köln at 8:30am Central time on FS2.
