One day after Uli Hoeness returned to the Bayern Presidency (and apologizing for calling Dortmund and Leipzig ‘enemies’) Bayern returned to winning ways on the pitch with a 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen to keep pace three points behind league-leaders RB Leipzig.
Thiago headed in from close range on the half hour mark to put Bayern ahead after Philipp Lahm’s initial shot was saved by Bernd Leno. Leverkusen equalized five minutes later after Hakan Calhanoglu played a give-and-go with Julian Brandt with the former scoring.
Bayern regained the lead in the 56th minute after Mats Hummels headed in a Joshua Kimmich corner for his first Bundesliga goal of the season.
Kevin Volland almost equalized eight minutes from time on a long ball from Jonathan Tah. Volland got by Manuel Neuer, but Javi Martinez did enough to disrupt the chance. One last Calhanoglu free kick went right to Neuer and the points went to Bayern.
“The victory is very important for us,” said Bayern manager Carlo Ancelotti. “It was a tough match because we’re in a difficult period and Leverkusen are a strong team. At times we played well, at times we had problems. Sometimes a victory is more important than a good display. I’m certain we’ll quickly improve our game.”
