In a sparsely-attended Friday evening game, the Philadelphia Union beat CF Montreal in Leagues Cup play, 2-0.  It was the first time in quite a while that Philadelphia had a full squad available to play, with Andre Blake back at full strength and with the return from Paris of Olympians Jack McGlynn and Nate Harriel.

Tai Barbibo continued in his scoring ways, ending the night with a brace.  His first score took place in first-half stoppage time. Samuel Adeniran shot hard and flat from the left toward the Montreal goal and Montreal’s keeper, Jonathan Sirois, Pushed the ball away.  Unfortunately for Sirois and Montreal, the ball landed directly at the feet of Philadelphia’s Tai Baribo, who knocked the ball into the Montreal goal. Baribo scored his second goal on the night during second-half stoppage time, when Montreal was pressing Philadelphia hard for an equalizer.  Philadelphia’s Jeremy Rafanello passed the ball to Jack McGlynn on a fast break.  McGlynn measured his precise pass to a sprinting forward Baribo, who took care not to miss the upper right quadrant of Montreal’s goal.

Montreal seemed wobbly for both halves, with a total of two shots on goal.

The Philadelphia Union continue in the Round of 16 in Leagues Cup play away against FC Cincinnati on Tuesday August 13, 2024.
