Angel City FC has moved quickly to address a position that may need to be addressed at some point during the season.

On Wednesday, Angel City announced that they had signed German goalkeeper Almuth Schult from VfL Wolfsburg. Schult will join the team in the Summer after The UEFA Women’s European Championship, which is scheduled to be held July 6-31.

“We are delighted to sign Almuth Schult to Angel City FC. ACFC Sporting Director Eniola Aluko said in a statement. Almuth is one of the best goalkeepers in the world with a host of winning accolades at the highest level of the game that will bring winning experience and a winning mentality to our group. It is a special addition to our goalkeeper group and defensive unit.”

Schult is regarded as one of the top keepers in the world. Schult has played her entire career in Germany, starting with Hamburger SV (2007-2008), Magdeburger FFC (2008-2011) and SC 07 Bad Neuenahr (2011-2013) before finally establishing herself with Wolfsburg, where she has won four Bundesliga titles and a UEFA Women’s Champions League title in 2014. Schult also has 64 caps with the German national team, with her standout moment coming in the Summer to 2016, when she was the starting keeper in all of Germany’s matches at the Olympics in Rio De Janerio, and her performance was crucial to Germany winning its first Olympic Gold Medal.

“It has always been a dream of mine to play in the NWSL,” Schult said in a satement. “I have followed Angel City since the day the team was announced. It’s so impressive and unique. Everything is not only about football, it’s about impact and supporting women. I am proud to be joining the team and I look forward to the summer.”

Angel City does have three keepers currently on its roster, and Didi Haracic has started all of Angel City’s four NWSL Challenge Cup games. However, in those four games, Angel City has given up 10 goals, though the current struggles are also due in part to its back line being decimated by injuries, particularly to Sarah Gorden. Angel City has two more Challenge Cup games before opening the regular season against the North Carolina Courage at Banc of California Stadium on April 29.
