Ever since Alvas Powell made the conversion to a defender, he has done his job. Still the man has a nose to the opposing squad’s goal and this Saturday he showed his one of a kind touch. Ever since the initial whistle in Saturday’s match against Minnesota the man played as if he was possessed. By his own initiative, he started the rally in the early minutes looking forward to converting one of those goals. Unfortunately, those plays never got the final addition. When he took matters into his own into his own hand with a midfield play and being solo made it happen. In the 23rd minute, he started his gallop towards the posts defended by Matt Lampson.
By taking with him a couple of the Loons defenders by showing off a one of a kind and amazing technique and shooting the ball to send the whole of Providence into frenzy. Three minutes passed when once again his presence and contributions were seen again. He earned an assist after passing a well-placed cross into a leaping Diego Valeri who delivered the side’s second goal.
While Saturday’s performance and subsequent MLS Player of the Week honors were certainly a highlight for the Jamaican international it wasn’t his first quality performance for Portland. Despite last campaign at times not showing off his notable game and juggling with injuries, losing the starting job he did show resolve and determination during the final days of the season. Those characteristics seemed to have prompted his return to the starting eleven. Although injuries have slowed down his once dynamic speed, as evidenced by Saturday’s performance, he still has plenty to give.
Portland has historically struggled to create attacking chances on the counter-attack. Here Alvas’ experience and rapport with his teammates has paid dividends for the side. It certainly made the difference in the 3-2 win at home last week. His hunger, inspired play, and ability to pick out his teammates on the counter gave Portland’s attack an extra gear against Minnesota.
Since he joined the Timbers in 2013 Powell has been known as a fighter, someone who will give his all for his side. His contributions are almost always delivered in the opportune moment. Aware of the increasing competition inside the Timbers, the man has stepped up his game to a new level and assured his starting position in every match.
Still the campaign is in the early stages and there is more to come. In the immediate future, NYCFC should prove to be a good challenge for Powell and the Timbers defense. A side that in the past relied too heavily on David Villa, NYCFC were forced to open things up with their Spanish captain sidelined due to injuries. Maxi Moralez (4 goals) and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi (4 goals) have developed a unique partnership up top that will likely produce more goals with Villa back in action. Powell’s hunger and willingness to put in the extra work on defense and on the counter will be sorely necessary in Saturday’s tie.
