It’s been a long season for the women of Doncaster Rovers. The Belles had lost all 15 of their games in a sixteen game season, ensuring relegation and last place.
In those 15 games, they had scored just seven goals and conceded 48. A season with no points loomed. But the side showed a remrkable spirit and their reward came today at Wycombe Wanderer’s Adams Park.
A 69th minute goal by Icelandic midfielder Katrin Omarsdottir gave the brave Belles a 1-0 lead over Reading which they held to the full time whistle, capturing their first points of the season.
It was not enough to avoid relegation or last place, but it was enough to bring joy to club captain Leandra Little who told the BBC:
“Seeing the goal go in was just an absolute massive, massive relief. Also, it is just nice to be celebrating something. To get together with the girls and celebrate and finish the season on a high is good.”
Little, whose header had set up Omarsdottir for the goal, added:
“It has been a tough season and we’ve put in a lot of part performances and had to weather storms for part of games. We also knew today was our last chance to get something. We didn’t want to go down with no points on the board and we said that we’d put our bodies on the line and go for it.”
It had been a story of close but no cigar for the Belles. Five of their 15 losses were by a single goal although they conceded four or more on eight occasions.
Omarsdottir had played briefly for Orange County Waves in 2011 has 64 caps for Iceland.
Manchester City will take the title after an unbeaten season. The Belles will be relegated along with the side they beat today Reading. The West Country pairing of Yeovil And Bristol City will replace them in the top division.
