A Midfielder and a forward among the Portland Timbers draftees on day one of the MLS SuperDraft

Welcome to Rose City Dawson McCartney and Diego Gutierrez, one a midfielder from Dartmouth College and Creighton University, respectively, the Portland Timbers went in the late rounds to make their selections.

Dawson McCartney, selected in the second round (No. 43rd overall) the former Big Green, this lad comes with an impressive soccer career in his with the Big Green Soccer program in Dartmouth College.

As a Freshman in 2017, McCartney earned Ivy League Rookie of the Year, Top Drawer Freshman Best XI first team, All-Ivy Honorable Mention, Ivy League Rookie Week 10/16), 2018 Sophomore All-Ivy Second Team, scoring three goals against Princeton (9/29), Niagara (9/21), and Albany (9/21).

In 2019, McCartney earned All-Ivy Second Team honors, started in all 12 games, scoring three goals against UMass (9/10), Niagara (9/21), and Albany (9/21), leading the team with four assists.

Before Dartmouth, he was Captain for U-18 Philadelphia Union Academy, participated in U.S. Soccer National Training Centers, and finish with a third-place USSDA 2014-2015.

Diego Gutierrez selected in the Third Round (70th overall), the former Blue Jay forward from Creighton University he can follow the same path as Jeremy Ebobisse selected in the 2018 SuperDraft.

He has played in 44 games during his previous three seasons at Nebraska-Omaha, making 37 starts and recording 10 goals and 13 assists, in just three seasons, he moved into the top 10 in UNO History in assists (3rd), shots on goal (3rd), points (4th), game-winning goals (5th) and goals (7th).

As a Junior, had one goal and led the team with four assists and 30 shots while starting all 13 appearances, as a Sophomore in 2018 he started 15 matches in 2018 with seven goals and seven assists. His 21 points rank third-most in UNO single-season history.

He was named First Team All-Summit League in 2018, two-time offensive player of the week, appeared in 16 games with nine starts as a Freshman, finishing with two goals and two assists.

Named to Summit League All-Tournament Team and All-Newcomer Team in 2017, played at UNO for head coaches Bob Warming and Jason Mims.
