Is Atlanta’s attacking style of yesterday back?
ATLANTA, GA—Atlanta United head coach Gonzalo Pineda got his first win, and his team had the feel of the Atlanta of the Tata Martino days. Homegrown defender and Atlanta United Academy product George Campbell scored his first MLS goal. Here are three thoughts on the three goals that brought home the biggest win of the season.
George Campbell is the next big thing
Those of us who have followed the growth of George Campbell from academy player all the way through the ranks with the Atlanta United 2 and now with the first team are not surprised. Campbell has shown no fear and continues to progress and mature. He is only 19 years old and has made excellent growth at each level. He is calm on the ball and surprisingly nimble for his size. Of course, he is not afraid to “mix it up”.
Attack, attack, attack!
The second goal was not a stroke of genius or master strategy. It came from the relentless attacking that the Atlanta offense poured on all night long. The past two years have been a slow, plodding side-to-side passing, dreary attack. While dominating possession, the attack never felt threatening. In this match, the offense was in relentless motion toward the goal. They had 18 shots, 5 on goal. This was without Josef Martínez, who was away on international duty. Luiz Araújo has brought a dynamic element that has worked well with the existing talent. This team has a lot more to give.
This is Barco
Ezequiel Barco is now in his fourth year in Atlanta. He has shown glimpses of greatness but has been unable to sustain the effectiveness. Since his return from the Olympics this summer, he is on fire. The final of the match was the 5th of the season, which marks a career-high. This combined with his three assists, he is having an impact on matches like never before. Combined with his hard work on defense and work rate, Barco is shining.
Final thought
All of this cannot be said without a mention of Marcelino Moreno. He has been one of the most consistent, hard-working players on the roster for two years. He is often overlooked or underappreciated, but he has been grinding hard regardless of who was coaching.
Now with a playoff spot within range, the final push of the season is really shaping up to be very interesting.
