What kind of a league will NISA be? We ask its president

Bob Watkins, the new president of the National Independent Soccer Association, was speaking the day after his league submitted papers for USSF Division 3 sanctioning. Confirming that there is no Plan B, if it is not granted, Watkins went on to talk about variety of subjects related to NISA and the soccer scene in the USA.

He outlined the difference between his league and other leagues.

There are eight clubs, the minimum to submit for the D3 status, but six others are waiting in the wings. They spread across the breadth of the continent, including potentially four on the west coast.

He outlines why there is no expansion fee to join NISA and explains why in his opinion there were so many failed clubs in the past. There is a $100, 000 annual membership but maintains that he’d rather the clubs kept their money to ensure the club has capital to stay afloat.

He compares the lack of geographic restriction to England and says in NISA, there’ll be no exclusive rights to a geographical area within the league.
