Hornby hat-trick hauls Scotland U21s to victory

Everton’s Fraser Hornby scored all three goals as Scotland beat Andorra 3-0 in an Under 21 European Championship qualifier.

His first was a penalty just before half time, but he added two more from open play in the second half.

It wasn’t easy against a solid but unambitious Andorra side but the 2,125 spectators were generous in their appreciation of the youngster’s efforts.

Other standouts were Chelsea’s Billy Gilmour who has been receiving rave reviews of late in the English media and Celtic’s Michael Johnston who on reflection probably needed to see more of the ball.

Scotland’s backline were rarely tested but when they were, David Bates looked to be a mature and capable performer, as did Liam Smith.

Scotland’s next Championship opponents are the Netherlands on September 11 in Doetinchem who are sure to give the dark blues more of a game but until then, coach Scot Gemmill can look back on this night’s work with more satisfaction than trepidation.

England still top the group after a 0-0 draw at home to the Dutch in Norwich.
