The Philadelphia Union travel to Seattle to take on the Sounders on Saturday April 16 at Century Link field. The game kicks off at 10 EDT in what should be a tightly fought contest. The Union sit top of the table at 3-2-0 while the Sounders are looking to jump start their season at 1-3-1.
Philadelphia come off a last minute victory at home against Orlando City. Tranquillo Barnetta broke the deadlock with a 90th minute free kick to seal the win for Philadelphia. The Union defense has been staunch, allowing just 5 goals in 5 games while scoring 7 in the same time. The newly formed back-line of Ken Tribbet and Richie Marquez has been formidable, as the two big center backs have created a great partnership in the early goings.
Unfortunately Tribbet is doubtful for the game, which will likely mean Brazilian Anderson will step in to take his place. The recent loanee has proven to be a strong tackler as well as a great header of the ball, but it will likely come down to how he is able to communicate with Marquez and fellow countryman Fabinho. Andre Blake has been outstanding thus far, and will likely need another wonderful performance if the Union want to take all 3 points from Seattle.
The Sounders meanwhile have taken 4 points from 5 games this year and sit at the bottom of the Western Conference table. Seattle is also coming off of a last minute goal, which salvaged a draw at BBVA Compass Stadium against the Houston Dynamo. Oalex Anderson’s cross found its way through the Dynamo defense and to Seattle defender Chad Marshall who tapped it in to save the Sounders a point. Young hotshot Jordan Morris and seasoned veteran Clint Dempsey will look to lead the lines for Seattle. The Union backline will have their hands full as the two Seattle attackers have potential for goals.
The two teams have a split record, at 3-3-2, with Seattle getting the edge while at home with a record of 3-1-0. Last year the two teams met in Philadelphia as the Union took a 1-0 victory last June.
This year both teams have flipped their position from the year before, as the Union will look to keep their good results coming. Can the Sounders find their form in front of the most energetic fans in the league? Or will Philadelphia get a result in the harsh environment of Century Link Field? This game will likely come down to one mistake, as the two look to be evenly matched.
