Sébastien Le Toux was born on January 10, 1984 in Mont-Saint-Aignan, Normandy, also the birth place of Juventus star Mohammed Sissoko, Tony Parker the NBA star recently married to Eva Longoria and Jacques Anquetil, the first cyclist to win the Tour de France five times. He currently plays for the Seattle Sounders in the USL First Division. Le Toux netted 10 goals in 2007 in Sounders USL title winning season, which tied him with Charles Gbeke of the Montreal Impact as the division's top goal-scorer. On September 28, 2007 Le Toux became Seattle Sounders fourth USL First Division Most Valuable Player. On May 8, 2008 he became the first player to be signed by the Seattle Sounders FC of MLS, which will begin playing in the 2009 season. Prost Amerika sat down and talked to Sébastien hours before the Sounders kicked off their US Open Cup tie against MLS side Chivas USA on July 2, 2008.  Photo: Rick Morrison GOALSeattle.com Sébastien Le Toux: I began to play when I was seven, before that I was dancing, that’s what my mother wanted me to be. She put me in a dance class but I preferred to play football like my older brother. I played for that team until I was twelve and because I was pretty good at that level my mother registered me for a try-out for a school side. I tried out and the school coach liked what he saw and contacted my mother. At 16, I decided to try out for Rennes. So from 13 to 19, I played for Stade Rennais. At 17, their youth academy offered me a contract and it was at that point you can say I became a professional player. The Academie wasn’t a real school, there were no girls just boys, but there were academic classes too. There were just two pupils in my class. At 19, they didn’t offer me a pro contract, so I went to L’Orient. Because the seasons start at different times, I could try out in the USA and after trying for FC Dallas, I ended up here at Seattle Sounders FC. Prost Amerika: You’ve actually just answered all my questions in one!. Sébastien Le Toux: (smiles) It is my way. Prost Amerika: What many people may not know is that last year when you won the USL with Seattle, that wasn’t your first ever trophy. What is the Coupe Gambardella? Sébastien Le Toux: That was actually my second trophy with Stade Rennais because we won le Championnat at that age level the year before. Four teams made it into a play-off, but the Gambardella was special because of the size of the stadium. The Gambardella was at the Stade de France (where the 1998 World Cup final was played), as the warm up game for the French Cup final that year. The crowd was still arriving so it was mostly our friends and families there. Prost Amerika: How did that trophy win differ from the Sounders trophy winning night last year? Sébastien Le Toux: The size of the stadium. Le Stade de France holds 80,000 people and Tukwila is much smaller. But here it was much better because of the hunger of the fans. The Stade de France was a bit empty. But last year here it was full and it was perfect to win a final here. Prost Amerika: Currently you are the only confirmed MLS player for next year. Are you finding that marks you out as a target for opposition defenders? Are they marking you tighter and kicking you harder? Sébastien Le Toux: Since this time last year, all the teams and coaches know me better and therefore I don’t have that element of the unknown this year. That has made this year harder. But having been the MVP last year, every opponent is aware of me. I’m not saying they study my game all the time but I am happy. If it were the other way I would be sad. Prost Amerika: Next year of course, there is a whole new set of defenders. Sébastien Le Toux: Next year it will be harder because we are in the MLS. We don’t have any experience, we’ll have nothing. We show humility, we play and we’ll learn and we’ll try to be very hungry to win every game as we are tonight. Prost Amerika: In the dressing room, are your team mates giving you a hard time? Are you the recipient of a lot of jokes? Sébastien Le Toux: No, no. I try and accept I am now more of a leader of this team and I try and set a good example and ask myself how I can help them to find their way and join me for the next season. Of course they call me the ‘superstar’ in humor but I accept that, it’s part of the deal. Prost Amerika: Looking forward to next season, are you hoping perhaps to be joined by another Frenchman in the squad? Sébastien Le Toux: There is currently another one in the team, Yousuff Kante, he joined earlier this season, he’s a good player. I hope he will be able to join me next year. Prost Amerika: If you could pick one Frenchman to be playing for MLS Seattle next year, who would it be? Sébastien Le Toux: (rolls eyes) Wow. Yousuff Kante. (grins) Prost Amerika: This brings me onto the subject of France. Were you disappointed in how they performed in Euro 2008? Sébastien Le Toux: No, not disappointed at all. I am very happy for Spain because they played a very nice type of soccer, a soccer people like to watch and I am very into watching this type of soccer. They made football an entertainment and I am very happy they won. I am now in the USA and can keep up on the internet, but with the time lag and everything, I feel like I am looking from a distance and I follow the MLS more now. Sébastien Le Toux: If I do have an international ambition, it’s to play for the country which has accepted me. I’ll do my best and I do like it here. Prost Amerika: So you would theoretically be willing to represent the USA if selected? Sébastien Le Toux: If they ask me, I would be very honoured to do that, and if there was a chance I’d jump at it. Prost Amerika: As the first ever player for MLS Seattle, you will be the answer to many a football trivia question. How does it feel to be a historical figure when you are just 24? Sébastien Le Toux: I don’t think about it now but maybe in 30 years, I will look back at my career and say ‘Oh yeah, I was the first player ever for that club.’ But I’m not thinking about that now but just how to make this a big club, provide great entertainment and maybe be the best. But I’m not – ‘every morning, hey, I am the first, and then stop at that’. But perhaps when I am eighty, I’ll say it to my grandchildren. Prost Amerika: Et enfin, will you come back and talk to us again when you have scored your first MLS goal? Sébastien Le Toux: Ah oui, naturellement. Prost Amerika: And create even more history? Sébastien Le Toux: I hope to score my first goal in the MLS next season and I am working for that this year in the months we play in the USL But I don’t even know if I will be in the starting line up next year Prost Amerika: I know you have a game to prepare for but I just have to tell you that your English is now officially better than my French. Sébastien Le Toux wurde am 10. Er spielt zurzeit für die Seattle Sounders in der Ersten USL Liga. 2007 schoss Le Toux 10 Tore, in der Season, in der die Sounders den USL Titel gewannen. Nun steht er gleichauf mit Charles Gbeke von den Montreal Impact als Spitzentorschütze der Liga. Am 28. September 2007 wurde Le Toux der vierte ‚Most Valuable Player’ (der wertvollste Spieler) der Seattle Sounders in der 1. Liga der USL. Am 8. Mai 2008 wurde er der erste Spieler, der vom Seattle Sounders FC für die MLS, die Erste Liga verpflichtet wurde, die in der Season 2009 anfangen zu spielen. Prost Amerika nahm sich Zeit und sprach mit Sébastien am 2. Juli 2008, nur Stunden bevor die Sounders zum US Open Pokalspiel gegen den Erstligisten Chivas USA anstießen. Séb enttäuschte nicht und erzielte das zweite Tor zu einem 2-0 Sieg. (Lesen Sie den Spielbericht (englisch) hier) Prost Amerika: Du bist in einer Stadt namens Mont-Saint-Aignan geboren. Erzähl uns bitte, wie du von daher zum Fußball gekommen bist. Sébastien Le Toux: Ich fing an zu spielen als ich sieben Jahre alt war; davor hab ich getanzt. Meine Mutter wollte, dass ich das mache. Sie steckte mich in eine Tanzklasse, aber ich mochte lieber Fußball spielen wie mein älterer Bruder. Ich spielte für das Team bis ich zwölf Jahre alt war und weil ich auf dem Niveau ziemlich gut spielte, trug mich meine Mutter probeweise für eine Schulmannschaft ein. Ich versuchte es und dem Schultrainer gefiel, was er sah und setzte sich mit meiner Mutter in Verbindung. Mit 16 probierte ich es bei Rennes. Von 13 bis 19 spielte ich für Stade Rennais. Mit 17 bot mir ihre Jugendakademie einen Vertrag an und an diesem Punkt, wenn man so will, wurde ich ein professioneller Spieler. Die Akademie war keine richtige Schule; da gab es keine Mädchen, nur Jungs, aber es gab auch akademische Kurse. In meiner Klasse hatte ich nur zwei Mitschüler. Mit 19 boten sie mir keinen Profivertrag an und deshalb ging ich zu L’Orient. Weil die Seasons zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten begannen, konnte ich es in den USA versuchen und nachdem ich mich um den FC Dallas bemüht hatte, landete ich hier beim Seattle Sounders FC. Prost Amerika: Du hast eigentlich gerade alle meine Fragen am Stück beantwortet! Sébastien Le Toux: (schmunzelt) Das ist meine Art. Prost Amerika: Was viele Leute vielleicht nicht wissen ist, dass der Pokal, den du im letzten Jahr mit dem Sieg Seattles in der USL gewonnen hast, nicht deine allererste Trophäe ist. Was ist die Coupe Gambardella? Sébastien Le Toux: Das war eigentlich mein zweiter Pokal mit Stade Rennais, weil wir im Jahr davor le Championnat in der Altersstufe gewonnen haben. Vier Mannschaften haben es ins Ausscheidungsspiel geschafft, aber die Gambardella war was Besonderes, schon wegen der Größe des Stadiums. Die Gambardella fand im Stade de France (wo das Weltmeisterschaftsfinale von 1998 gespielt wurde) als Aufwärmspiel für das French Cup Endspiel in dem Jahr statt. Die Zuschauer strömten erst nach und nach dazu, so dass zum größten Teil unsere Freunde und Familien da waren. Prost Amerika: Wie unterschied sich der Pokalsieg von der Pokalsiegnacht der Sounders im letzten Jahr? Sébastien Le Toux: Die Größe des Stadiums. Le Stade des France fasst 80,000 Leute, Tukwila ist viel kleiner. Aber hier war es viel besser auf Grund der hoch motivierten Fans. Das Stade de France war ein wenig leer. Aber letztes Jahr war es hier voll und perfekt, um das Endspiel hier zu gewinnen. Prost Amerika: Du bist im Moment der einzige bestätigte MLS Spieler für das nächste Jahr. Denkst du, das macht dich zu einer Zielscheibe für Abwehrspieler der Konkurrenz? Bewerten sie dich strenger und behandeln dich härter? Sébastien Le Toux: Seit dieser Zeit im letzten Jahr kennen mich nun alle Mannschaften und Trainer besser. Deshalb habe ich in diesem Jahr nicht den Unbekanntheitsbonus. Das hat dieses Jahr härter für mich gemacht. Aber der MVP [wertvollste Spieler, Anm. d. Red.] im letzten Jahr gewesen zu sein, bedeutet, dass jeder Kontrahent mich wahrnimmt. Ich sag nicht, dass sie meine Spielweise die ganze Zeit studieren, aber ich bin glücklich. Wenn es anders herum wäre, wäre ich sicher traurig. Prost Amerika: Nächstes Jahr wird es freilich eine ganz neue Zusammenstellung von Abwehrspielern geben. Sébastien Le Toux: Nächstes Jahr wird es schwerer werden, weil wir in der MLS sind. Wir haben absolut keine Erfahrung, wir werden gar nichts haben. Wir werden Bescheidenheit zeigen, spielen und lernen und wir werden versuchen sehr ehrgeizig zu sein, um jedes Spiel zu gewinnen, so wie wir es heute Abend sein werden. Prost Amerika: Machen dir deine Teamkollegen in der Kabine das Leben schwer? Bist du der Empfänger vieler Scherze? Sébastien Le Toux: Nein, nein. Ich versuche zu akzeptieren, dass ich jetzt stärker denn je der Führungsspieler dieser Mannschaft bin und ich bemühe mich ein gutes Beispiel abzugeben und frage mich selbst, wie ich ihnen helfen kann, ihren Weg zu finden und sich mir für die nächste Season anzuschließen. Prost Amerika: In Erwartung der nächsten Season, hoffst du vielleicht auf Unterstützung durch einen weiteren Franzosen in der Mannschaft? Sébastien Le Toux: Wir haben zurzeit einen weiteren in der Mannschaft, Yousuff Kante; er stieß früher in dieser Season dazu. Er ist ein guter Spieler. Ich hoffe, er wird im Stande sein, sich mir im nächsten Jahr anzuschließen. Prost Amerika: Wenn du einen Franzosen auswählen dürftest, um mit dir für MLS Seattle im kommenden Jahr zu spielen, wer würde es sein? Sébastien Le Toux: (rollt mit den Augen) Wow. Yousuff Kante. (schmunzelt) Prost Amerika: Das führt mich zum Thema Frankreich. Warst du enttäuscht darüber, wie sie in der Euro 2008 gespielt haben? Sébastien Le Toux: Nein, kein bisschen enttäuscht. Ich bin sehr glücklich für Spanien, weil sie auf eine sehr sorgfältige Art und Weise Fußball gespielt haben; Fußball, den die Leute sehen mögen und ich mag es, solcher Art von Fußball zuzusehen. Sie machten das Fußballspiel zur Unterhaltung und ich bin sehr glücklich darüber, dass sie gewonnen haben. Ich bin nun in den USA und kann über das Internet am Ball bleiben, aber mit dem Zeitunterschied und allem anderen fühle ich mich, als würde ich aus der Entfernung zuschauen und verfolge die MLS nun stärker. Prost Amerika: Du hegst also keine Ambitionen eines Tages für Frankreich zu spielen? Sébastien Le Toux: Wenn ich eine internationale Zielsetzung habe, dann ist es die, für das Land zu spielen, das mich aufgenommen hat. Ich werde mein Bestes geben und ich mag es hier. Prost Amerika: Du würdest also, theoretisch gesprochen, bereit sein die USA zu vertreten, falls du ausgewählt wirst? Sébastien Le Toux: Wenn sie mich fragen, würde ich es als große Ehre empfinden das zu tun und wenn es eine Gelegenheit gibt, würde ich sie ergreifen. Sébastien Le Toux: Ich denke jetzt nicht darüber nach, aber in 30 Jahren schaue ich vielleicht auf meine Karriere zurück und sage 'Oh man, ich war der allererste Spieler für diesen Verein.' Aber ich denke im Moment nicht darüber nach, sondern nur, wie dies ein starker Verein werden kann, wie wir großartige Unterhaltung bieten können und vielleicht die Besten werden. Aber ich denke nicht jeden Morgen 'Hey, ich bin der erste und nun Schluss damit'. Wenn ich achtzig bin, dann sage ich das möglicherweise zu meinen Enkelkindern. Prost Amerika: Zum Schluss die Frage, würdest du zurückkommen und wieder mit uns sprechen, wenn du dein erstes MLS Tor erzielt hast? Sébastien Le Toux: Oh ja, natürlich. Prost Amerika: Um noch mehr Geschichte zu schreiben? Sébastien Le Toux: Ich hoffe, dass ich mein erstes Tor in der nächsten MLS Season erringen werde. Dafür arbeite ich dieses Jahr in den Monaten, in denen wir in der USL spielen. Aber ich weiß noch nicht einmal, ob ich in der Startaufstellung für nächstes Jahr überhaupt drin bin. Prost Amerika: Ich weiß, dass du dich auf ein Spiel vorzubereiten hast, aber ich muss dir einfach sagen, dass dein Englisch nun offiziell besser als mein Französisch ist.
